GEFP queries – answered

Good day

I am interested to hear whether GEPF was supposed to reimbursed a member interests of 5 months whilst they delayed payment from May until October? No interests were paid.

Denzil Cape Town

The GEPF pays an above market related interest rate to all late payments from date of exit as compensation to members. This is a case specific question and we would be happy to further look into the case to provide a more detailed and specific response. Kindly provide the pension or ID number of the member.

Hi Cathy and Brain

I hear you only speak about GEPF. My problem is the benefits of someone who died unmarried ,children over 21yrs of age No clear answer who will be given monies, all what we hear is that state won't pay out over 21yrs beneficiaries.

The member’s actuarial value (total pension interest) will always be paid out under all circumstances. If a member has completed a nomination, it will be used as a basis for payment. If not, we will look at the general rules. In the event there is no surviving dependant, the money will be paid out to the Estate Account in his name.

GEPF, mentioning of that name (GEPF) just turns my stomach and makes me extremely sick. Their Officials have a very appalling & bad tendency, it's almost a year now since we've been doing & submitting the same thing. When you phone them or them phoning you as a beneficiary then they'll ask you to do & submit the same documents that we've been submitting from day one, and it's no surprise that one a call from GEPF from National then next time we'll get a call from GEPF Pietermaritzburg, then next time we'll get a call from GEPF Durban, so we have to start afresh explaining and again submitting same documents. They GEPF are just bunch of useless Government workers, it's a shame

This is a case-specific enquiry and we will appreciate the pension or ID number to access the profile and provide a response.

Ask the gentlemen from GEPF

The real question is after 5 years what happens if both parents dies?

Chikidi from Mpumalanga

After 5 years the member has been on pension, their actuarial value will be depleted. If the continue to live they (their pension) will be funded through GEPF’s savings from investments for the remainder of their life. So if they both die, the pension will stop as the member’s total monetary value will be depleted.

Good morning Kathy

Could you pleas ask your GEPF guest as to how long do they take to pay out Redress pension money. I have since claim for my late Mother's one in 2011 and the matter has been finalised.

Itumeleng from Bloemfontein

Hi.

Can Efraim pls give updates on the pension redress?
Special Pension.

Those members who resigned. I believe a pension redress due to unfairness towards members of color before 1995 - I think.

Thank you SAFM for addressing this issue

The GPAA is fully aware of the frustrations endures by applicants. However, the GPAA as the Administrator of Military Veteran pension relies on the availability of budget for the payment of this benefit from the Department of Military veteran (DMV). The DMV issued a media statement in July regarding the delayed payments. We are still waiting for further instruction from the DMV.

I will provide the DMV press statement

Good morning.

Do members have to update the nomination forms every year or only when there are changes?

Anon

Only when dependants’ circumstances change. For example, marriage, divorce, child addition, etc. the GEPF will always use the last one on record.

Hi there.

Where can someone check online how much pension you have? Alternatively, a number you can call to check the pension fund amount?

One can use our Call Centre line for that purpose especially afterhours. Our Interactive Voice Response operates 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. It will therefore be convenient for members to use this facility afterhours when the volume of calls is down. Furthermore members may use the Self Service App to access benefit statements. Regional and satellite offices are also available to provide the service.

Hi Cathy,

Who do you contact for a claim when your father died on duty years ago while working at Spoornet and your mother died recently and she have invest the money. Because my spouse and her siblings don't know yet how to do the claim the right way.

I am at work now so I'll tell her what your feedback was thank you

Client needs to approach Spoornet to determine the pension fund it (Spoornet) was the participating employer of at the time and take the matter directly to the pension fund.

Good morning Cathy and crew.

GEPF is a joke, they don't respond to calls / emails.

My colleague, a policeman who recently went on retirement was informed by GEPF in writing that his monthly salary will be R37000, he received his first salary in July 2025 and in August was not paid, he went to their office in Durban to find out why he was not paid but instead of apologizing he was informed that he was overpaid since he was not supposed to receive R37000 monthly payment but R18000 and that was why he was not paid since that was the only way to rectify their mistake, there was no apology, even informed before hand.

Case specific enquiry. Please provide further details.

Good day Sis'Cathy

Re: GEPF:

RSA government doesn't seem to have the best interests of its employees as well as their families as soon as they are late.

The system is definitely designed to not benefit the families of employees, especially when their member and/or member's spouse passes on. Instead of reckon it works to benefit government coffers for their benefits.

Thanks again for your valued efforts.

Kind regards,
Rapabi in the eastern Free-State

GEPF is one of the best pension funds globally. However, our benefits are administered in terms of rules and adherence to those rules is strict. There has been none contributory benefits to members and more and more keep being added with no extra cost to the members. On the other hand, the GEPF has a duty to protect the interests of the members remaining in the fund. Therefore when current benefits are paid, that cannot be done to the detriment of the members remaining in the fund.

Hi

What is the difference between 1 third, gratuity and pension interest?

Anonymous
1/3, gratuity and lump sum are used synonymously by different people and entities. These refer to the initial once off payment by a pension fund to a retiring member.

On the other hand, annuities or monthly payments are those payments made in 12 months instalments per year, to members.
